Do Thai citizens need a visa for Japan?
Thai passport holders can enter Japan without a visa, but the permitted stay is shorter than for most other visa-free nationalities. Thai nationals are allowed a maximum of 15 days per visit without a visa. This is a firm limit and applies to tourism, business visits, and family stays.
If you want to stay longer than 15 days, you must apply for a short-stay visa before you travel. Thai nationals cannot apply for the Japan eVisa directly online. Applications for a visa must be made in person at the Embassy of Japan in Bangkok or one of the consulates in Chiang Mai or Osaka (for Thai nationals residing in Japan).

Even without a visa, you may be asked to show proof of sufficient funds for your stay when you arrive in Japan. A return or onward ticket is required. Immigration officers may also ask for accommodation confirmation.
Applying for a visa (stays over 15 days)
Thai nationals who need more than 15 days must apply at the Embassy of Japan in Bangkok or at the consulate in Chiang Mai.
Documents required: completed visa application form, valid passport, one recent passport-size photograph (4cm x 3cm, white background), confirmed return flight booking, accommodation confirmation for your full stay, a detailed day-by-day itinerary, three months of bank statements, and an employment certificate or proof of occupation.
The fee is ¥15,000 for a single-entry visa and ¥30,000 for a multiple-entry visa. Standard processing takes 3 to 5 business days. Apply at least two to three weeks before your travel date.
Health requirements
No vaccinations are required to enter Japan. All COVID-19 entry requirements have been lifted.
Other entry requirements
All arriving passengers must complete a disembarkation card on the flight. Fingerprinting and photography are taken at the port of entry. Cash or valuables exceeding ¥1,000,000 must be declared at customs.
Frequently asked questions
Can I extend my visa-free stay beyond 15 days from within Japan?
