Australia entry requirements for travellers from Nigeria
Do Nigerian citizens need a visa for Australia?
Yes. Nigerian passport holders must obtain a visa before travelling. Nigeria is not on the Electronic Travel Authority list and is not covered by the eVisitor, so visits are made on a Visitor visa (subclass 600), tourist stream. There is no frequent traveller option for Nigerian citizens.
Applications from Nigeria are assessed closely, and the quality of the evidence matters more than the length of the application. A well documented case with clear funding and a clear reason to return is what makes the difference.
How long can you stay in Australia?
The tourist stream can be granted for three, six or twelve months, at the department’s discretion. Three months is the usual grant for a first application.
Passport validity requirements
Your passport must be valid for the whole of your stay. Australia does not impose a six month validity rule, though airlines and transit countries commonly do. Tell the department if your passport is renewed after the visa is granted.
Proof of funds
You must show that you can support yourself for the visit and pay for your return travel. There is no published minimum. Bank statements covering three to six months, salary evidence, company registration documents and property records all help. A large deposit shortly before applying is treated with caution rather than as proof of means.
Where family in Australia are paying, include their income evidence, their citizenship or visa evidence, and a letter setting out exactly what they will cover.
Onward or return travel
A confirmed return ticket is not required to apply, and non refundable bookings before a decision are unwise. Your application should show your intended dates and what will bring you home.

Prepare your passport biodata page, a recent photograph, evidence of funds, proof of employment or business ownership, your itinerary, and full details of anyone you are visiting.
Biometrics at an Australian Biometric Collection Centre are normally required. Book the appointment as soon as the department asks, since processing pauses until they are received.
Health requirements
A health examination may be requested, particularly for stays over six months, for anyone who will spend time in healthcare settings or with children, and where tuberculosis screening is indicated. The department issues referral letters naming the clinics you may use.
Yellow fever is relevant here. If you have been in a declared yellow fever risk country, which includes Nigeria, in the six days before arriving in Australia, you must present a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate.
Other entry requirements
Complete the Incoming Passenger Card on the flight. Australian biosecurity is strict, and items most often seized from travellers arriving from Nigeria include dried fish and meat, egusi and other seeds, spices, palm oil products and homemade foods. Declare all of it.
Cash of AUD10,000 or more, or the naira equivalent, must be declared.
