Australia entry requirements for travellers from Nepal
Do Nepali citizens need a visa for Australia?
Yes. Nepali passport holders must hold a visa before travelling. Nepal is not on the Electronic Travel Authority list and is not covered by the eVisitor, so visits are made on a Visitor visa (subclass 600), tourist stream. Nepal is not covered by the frequent traveller stream either, so there is no ten year option.
A large share of Nepali travel to Australia is family based, often to visit adult children who are studying or working there. Applications that document the family connection and the applicant’s reasons for returning tend to run more smoothly.
How long can you stay in Australia?
The tourist stream can be granted for three, six or twelve months. The department decides, and three months is the usual grant for a first application. A longer period is more likely where there is a clear reason, such as a birth in the family.
Passport validity requirements
Your passport must be valid for the whole of your stay. Australia does not impose a six month validity rule, although airlines and any country you transit will often apply their own. Tell the department if your passport is renewed after the visa is granted.
Proof of funds
You must show that you can support yourself for the visit and pay for your return travel. There is no published minimum. Bank statements covering three to six months carry much more weight than a single closing balance, and a large deposit made shortly before applying will be questioned.
Where a relative in Australia is funding the visit, include their evidence of income, their visa or citizenship evidence, and a letter setting out exactly what they are paying for.
Onward or return travel
A confirmed return ticket is not required to apply, and buying non refundable flights before a decision is unwise. Your application should still show when you intend to leave and what will bring you home.

Prepare your passport biodata page, a recent photograph, evidence of funds, proof of employment, business ownership, pension or land holdings, your itinerary, and details of anyone you are visiting.
Biometrics at an Australian Biometric Collection Centre are normally required. Book the appointment as soon as you are asked, since processing pauses until the department receives them.
Health requirements
A health examination is commonly requested for applicants from Nepal, particularly for stays longer than six months, for anyone who will spend time in healthcare settings or with children, and where tuberculosis screening is indicated. Wait for the department to issue referral letters and use only the panel clinics it names.
A yellow fever certificate is required only if you have been in a yellow fever risk country in the six days before arrival.
Other entry requirements
Complete the Incoming Passenger Card on the flight. Australian biosecurity is strict, and items most often seized from travellers arriving from Nepal include spices, lentils and other seeds, dried meat, ghee, homemade pickles and religious items containing plant or animal material. Declare all of it: declaring costs you nothing, failing to declare costs a fine.
Cash of AUD10,000 or more, or the equivalent in Nepali rupees, must be declared.
