Australia entry requirements for travellers from India
Do Indian citizens need a visa for Australia?
Yes. Indian passport holders must hold a visa before boarding a flight to Australia. India is not on the Electronic Travel Authority list and is not eligible for the free eVisitor visa, so the pathway for tourism and family visits is the Visitor visa (subclass 600), tourist stream.
India is one of Australia’s largest and fastest growing visitor markets, driven heavily by family visits, weddings and cricket tours. That volume also means the Department of Home Affairs sees a great many applications from India, and a thin application is far more likely to be refused than a thorough one.
How long can you stay in Australia?
The Visitor visa can be granted for three, six or twelve months. The department decides the period, and most first time applicants are granted three months. Longer grants generally go to applicants with a strong travel history or a clear reason for a longer stay, such as visiting a child who has recently had a baby.
Your visa will carry conditions showing whether you can enter once or multiple times, and how long you may stay on each visit.
Passport validity requirements
Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay. Australia does not impose a six month validity rule, although airlines and any country you transit through may apply their own. If you renew your passport after the visa is granted, contact the department so the visa can be linked to the new document.
Proof of funds
You must show that you can support yourself for the whole visit and pay for your return travel. There is no published minimum figure. Bank statements covering the last three to six months carry more weight than a single closing balance, because the department is looking for a settled financial position rather than a recent deposit.
If a relative in Australia is funding the trip, include their evidence of income and a letter confirming what they are paying for.
Onward or return travel
You are not required to hold a return ticket when you apply, and booking non refundable flights before the visa is granted is unwise. You should be able to show a credible plan to leave, which for most applicants means a draft itinerary plus the ties that will bring you home.
Applying for your Australian visa

Prepare your passport biodata page, a recent photograph, evidence of funds, proof of employment or business ownership, and details of anyone you are visiting in Australia. Applicants visiting family usually include an invitation letter, the relative’s visa or citizenship evidence, and confirmation of where you will stay.
Most Indian applicants are asked to attend an Australian Biometric Collection Centre to give fingerprints and a facial photograph. Book the appointment as soon as the department asks, because processing pauses until your biometrics are received.
Processing times vary considerably. Apply well ahead of a wedding, graduation or booked tour rather than assuming a fast decision.
Health requirements
Some visitors are asked to complete a health examination, and this is more common for applicants from countries with a higher incidence of tuberculosis, for stays longer than six months, and for anyone who will spend time in a healthcare setting or working with children. If an examination is required, the department will tell you and issue referral letters.
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you have been in a yellow fever risk country in the six days before arriving.
Other entry requirements
Complete the Incoming Passenger Card handed out on your flight. Australia enforces biosecurity rules strictly, and Indian travellers are stopped most often for spices, sweets, ghee, seeds and homemade food carried for relatives. Declare everything. Declaring an item that turns out to be prohibited costs you the item; failing to declare it can cost you a fine or your visa.
Cash of AUD10,000 or more, or the equivalent in rupees, must be declared on arrival.

Can I extend my visa once I am in Australia?

Can I work or study on a visitor visa?
No. The Visitor visa does not permit work. Short courses of study are limited, and anything longer needs a student visa.
