Thailand entry requirements for travellers from South Africa
Visa requirement summary
South African passport holders can enter Thailand without a visa for tourism and short visits. The current visa exemption allows up to 60 days per entry.
The Thai Cabinet approved a reduction to 30 days for most countries, and South Africa was included in the visa-exempt list under the existing 93-country scheme. However, as of late 2026 the revised rules had not been published in the Royal Gazette and the 60-day allowance remained in place at borders. Verify the current position with the Royal Thai Embassy before you travel, as the change can come into effect quickly once gazetted.

Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)
Since May 2025, all visitors to Thailand must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card before arrival — this is mandatory and applies to all nationalities including visa-exempt travellers. Submit it free at tdac.immigration.go.th within 72 hours before your scheduled arrival. A QR code will be sent to your email.

South African travellers currently receive up to 60 days per entry. A 30-day extension is available at any Thai immigration office for 1,900 THB.

Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date in Thailand.
Proof of funds and financial requirements
The standard funds expectation at the Thai border is 20,000 THB per person or 40,000 THB per family (approximately ZAR 15,000–16,000 per person at current rates). Cash, a bank card, or recent bank statements are accepted.
Onward or return travel
A confirmed return or onward flight should be carried when entering under the visa exemption.
Health requirements
No vaccinations are specifically required to enter Thailand from South Africa. Some travellers opt to get typhoid and hepatitis A vaccinations before visiting — consult a travel health clinic.
