Japan entry requirements for travellers from Indonesia
Do Indonesian citizens need a visa for Japan?
It depends on how long you plan to stay. Indonesian passport holders can enter Japan visa-free for up to 15 days. If you want to stay longer than 15 days, you must apply for a short-stay visa before you travel.
For visits of up to 15 days, Indonesian nationals with ePassports can enter Japan at the port of entry without a visa. You must hold a return ticket and sufficient funds.
If you need more than 15 days, you must apply for a visa in advance. Indonesian applicants can use Japan’s eVisa system through a MOFA-accredited travel agency, or apply in person at the Japanese embassy in Jakarta.
How long can you stay in Japan?
Visa-free entry: up to 15 days per visit.
With a short-stay visa: up to 90 days, with the exact duration determined by the immigration officer at the port of entry.
Short-stay visas cannot be extended or converted to long-term residency from within Japan.
Passport validity requirements
Your passport must be valid throughout your stay. An ePassport (with a chip) is required for visa-free entry. At least one blank page is needed for entry stamps. Japan does not require six months of validity beyond your departure date.
Proof of funds
You should carry evidence of sufficient funds for your stay. For visa applications, bank statements covering the past three months are typically required. For visa-free entry, immigration officers may ask to see proof of funds on arrival.
Onward or return travel
A confirmed return or onward ticket is required both for visa-free entry and when applying for a visa.
Applying for your Japan visa (stays over 15 days)
Option 1: eVisa through an accredited agency
Indonesian nationals can apply through a MOFA-registered travel agent. The agent submits your application electronically. If approved, the visa is issued digitally and linked to your passport.
Documents required: completed visa application form, valid ePassport, one passport-size photograph (4cm x 3cm, white background), confirmed return flight booking, accommodation confirmation, a detailed itinerary, three months of bank statements, and an employment certificate or proof of self-employment.
The fee is ¥15,000 for single-entry and ¥30,000 for multiple-entry. The agency may charge a service fee in addition. Processing typically takes 3 to 5 business days.
Option 2: Apply in person
You can apply at the Embassy of Japan in Jakarta. The same documents are required.
Health requirements
No vaccinations are required to enter Japan. All COVID-19 travel restrictions have been lifted.
Other entry requirements
You must complete a disembarkation card during your flight. Fingerprinting and photography are carried out at the port of entry. Cash or valuables over ¥1,000,000 must be declared at customs.
