Thailand entry requirements for travellers from Japan
Visa requirement summary
Japanese passport holders do not need a visa to visit Thailand. The current visa exemption grants up to 60 days per entry for tourism and short visits.
The Thai Cabinet has approved a reduction to 30 days for most countries, including Japan. As of late 2026 this was approved but had not been published in the Royal Gazette, so the 60-day rule remained in force. Confirm the current position with the Royal Thai Embassy in Tokyo before you travel.
For longer stays, a Tourist Visa (TR) can be applied for at thaievisa.go.th before departure.
Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)
All visitors to Thailand must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card before arrival. This mandatory requirement was introduced in May 2025 and applies to all nationalities, including visa-exempt travellers. Complete the TDAC free of charge at tdac.immigration.go.th within 72 hours of your arrival time. You will receive a QR code to show at the immigration counter.
How long you can stay
Japanese travellers may stay for up to 60 days per entry under the current visa exemption. An extension of 30 additional days can be obtained at any Thai immigration office for 1,900 THB.
Passport validity requirements
Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of arrival in Thailand. Ensure your passport meets this requirement well before your departure date.
Proof of funds and financial requirements
Immigration officers may ask you to demonstrate sufficient funds. The standard expectation is 20,000 THB per person or 40,000 THB per family. Cash, a bank card, or a bank statement can be shown as evidence.
Onward or return travel
A confirmed return or onward flight out of Thailand is expected when entering under the visa exemption. Have your booking confirmation ready for both check-in and the immigration counter.
Health requirements
No vaccinations are required for Japanese citizens entering Thailand. Travel health advice from a clinic specialising in travel medicine (トラベルクリニック) is recommended before visiting.
Other entry requirements
Thailand enforces strict drug laws, including the death penalty for trafficking. E-cigarettes are prohibited — bringing one into Thailand risks fines and confiscation.
The visa exemption does not permit work of any kind in Thailand. Japanese nationals seeking to work remotely from Thailand may apply for the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV).
