Australia entry requirements for travellers from New Zealand
Do New Zealand citizens need a visa for Australia?
New Zealand citizens do not apply for a visa before flying to Australia. Instead, you are granted a Special Category visa (subclass 444) when you arrive, provided you hold a valid New Zealand passport and meet the character requirements. There is no fee and no online form to complete in advance.
This arrangement exists under the Trans Tasman Travel Arrangement and is the reason New Zealand is consistently Australia’s largest source of visitors. It applies only to New Zealand citizens. If you live in New Zealand but hold another passport, you must apply for the visa that matches your own nationality, usually an Electronic Travel Authority, an eVisitor or a Visitor visa.
How long can you stay in Australia?
The Special Category visa lasts for as long as you remain in Australia and remain a New Zealand citizen. There is no fixed three month or twelve month limit, which makes it far more generous than any of the visitor pathways available to other nationalities.
The visa ceases when you leave Australia. You are granted a new one each time you arrive, so there is nothing to renew and nothing to extend.
Passport validity requirements
You must travel on a valid New Zealand passport. Australia does not require six months of validity beyond your departure date, but your passport must be valid for your entire stay. Airlines apply their own checks, so a passport close to expiry can still cause problems at the gate.
An emergency travel document issued by New Zealand is not the same as a passport for these purposes. Contact your airline and the Department of Home Affairs before travelling if you are using one.
Proof of funds
There is no formal funds test for the Special Category visa. You should still be able to explain how you will support yourself, particularly if you are arriving without onward travel booked and without an obvious purpose for the trip.
Onward or return travel
A return ticket is not required. The Special Category visa allows you to visit, work and study, so travellers arriving to look for work or to move indefinitely are not treated as a problem at the border in the way they would be on a visitor visa.
Applying for the visa
You apply on arrival. Complete the Incoming Passenger Card issued on your flight, present your New Zealand passport at the border, and the visa is granted electronically. Many travellers with an ePassport can use SmartGate at the major airports rather than seeing an officer.
You can also apply for a Special Category visa from within Australia if you are already here on another visa and it is about to cease.
Health requirements
No vaccinations are required for entry from New Zealand. Australia and New Zealand have a reciprocal health care agreement, which covers medically necessary treatment in public hospitals. It does not cover ambulance transport, repatriation or ongoing care, so travel insurance is still worth holding.
Other entry requirements
Australia enforces its biosecurity rules strictly. You must declare all food, plant material and animal products on the Incoming Passenger Card, including items that are perfectly legal in New Zealand such as honey, fresh fruit and some seeds. Fines are issued on the spot and a false declaration can put your visa at risk.
You must also declare cash of AUD10,000 or more, or the foreign currency equivalent.
The Special Category visa is not a permanent visa. It does not automatically lead to Australian citizenship and it does not give access to all social security payments, so check your entitlements before relying on them.

Yes. Every traveller, including infants, needs their own passport and is granted their own Special Category visa on arrival.
Can permanent residents of New Zealand use this arrangement?
